Beirut Governor Bans Slaughtering Livestock in Front of Butcher Shops or on Sidewalks

The Municipality of Beirut, by a decision issued by the Governor of Beirut, Judge Marwan Aboud, announced today, Wednesday, the prohibition of transporting slaughtered animals and meat in passenger vehicles or uncovered trucks. It emphasized that "any violation of this decision will subject the offender to the penalties stipulated in Article 770 of the Penal Code, in addition to the confiscation of unlawfully transported slaughtered animals and meat."

It clarified: "Slaughtering livestock in front of butcher shops, streets, or on sidewalks within the administrative boundaries of the Municipality of Beirut is prohibited, under the threat of closure, and slaughtering must be limited to licensed slaughterhouses. Additionally, transporting animal remains using unlicensed vehicles or carts, or tuk-tuks is forbidden, and compliance with the directives and decisions issued by the Ministry of Agriculture to exclusively carry out slaughtering in licensed slaughterhouses is required. Violators will face confiscation of their vehicles and legal action taken against them by the appropriate judicial authorities."

It added: "Slaughtered animals must be transported using designated and refrigerated vehicles, in accordance with the required health and technical standards. With a commitment to strictly enforce Decision No. 118, owners and operators of butcher shops are obligated to contract specialized entities for the collection of waste produced from these shops (including meat, bones, etc.), which will be responsible for collecting and processing this waste according to health and environmental regulations."
