What Type of Gun Did the Iranian Leader Carry During the Eid Sermon?

Iranian media published a photo of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei holding a Dragunov SVD sniper rifle like a cane while delivering the Eid al-Fitr sermon at Imam Khomeini Prayer Hall in Tehran. The Dragunov is a Russian-made sniper rifle developed in 1965 and introduced into service in 1967. It is lighter than its counterparts, and its mechanical operation is similar to that of the Kalashnikov, although some parts of the sniper differ in size from those of the Kalashnikov.

A notable feature of this rifle is the hole in the wooden buttstock, which has a cheek rest (in some models) that facilitates viewing through the scope or sighting, making it easier and more comfortable for the sniper. The rifle operates on a gas-operated mechanism and is semi-automatic, with a magazine that holds 10 rounds. It has a muzzle brake to reduce recoil and improve shot accuracy. Although a front bipod can be attached, it is impractical due to the rifle's length and lightness, as it is not intended for close combat.

The scope used with the sniper is of the PSO-1 type, measuring 370 mm in length with (X4) magnification and a rubber piece before the eye, featuring a battery compartment to illuminate the reticle for nighttime use. Additionally, another type of scope, the NSP-3, can be mounted, measuring 490 mm with a magnification of 2.7 times, and other types can also be used.
