On Thursday, Spotify announced the expansion of its partnership with Google Cloud to utilize large language models to help identify user listening patterns for podcasts and audiobooks in order to make recommendations that suit each user's interests. These AI-based large language models, like OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google Bard, are trained on vast amounts of data to generate texts and other content.
Spotify is one of the first companies to adopt AI technologies, having used them in its music recommendation algorithms for the past decade. Now, the Swedish company aims to apply large language models to extend this approach to its non-music content, such as podcasts and audiobooks.
As a leading player in music streaming, Spotify is working to increase its revenues by expanding its list of income-generating formats, such as podcasts and audiobooks. Spotify's Product and Technology Director, Gustav Söderström, stated, "As our technology evolves, Google Cloud's commitment to building the best possible platform for our products and enhancing innovation using emerging generative AI capabilities has aligned perfectly."
Through this expanded partnership with Google, Spotify is also exploring the use of large language models to provide a safer listening experience and identify potentially harmful content.
