The Reason Behind the Death of a Taylor Swift Fan

Brazilian police announced today that the cause of death for one of Taylor Swift's fans after feeling unwell during a concert in Rio de Janeiro last month was due to suffering from heat stroke. Ana Clara Benevides, 23, collapsed at the Nilton Santos Olympic Stadium on November 17 while attending the first of six shows by Swift in Brazil as part of the "Eras Tour." The concert took place during a record heatwave in Brazil in November, with Rio de Janeiro recording the highest temperatures ever on that day, as the heat index reached 59.3 degrees Celsius.

A police report released today stated that Benevides suffered from heat exhaustion, which led to problems with her cardiovascular and respiratory systems, resulting in her death. Concert organizers admitted they could have taken more measures to help the audience cope with the extreme heat in Rio, such as changing the concert start times and allowing the audience to bring water cups. Following the news of Benevides' death, Swift wrote on Instagram that her "heart is broken" and that she is "devastated." She postponed her second concert in Rio the following day due to the high temperatures but went ahead with the remaining performances in Brazil as part of the "Eras" tour.
