Dentist Ludmila Shimiakina confirms that "all types of candies are harmful to teeth, especially when consumed in excess, particularly caramel and toffee." In an interview with "Gazeta.Ru," Shimiakina stated: "When we talk about the damage to teeth, we first point to those sweets that stick to the teeth and remain in the mouth for a long time – caramel, lollipops, and others. Because these types contribute more than other sweets to the development of tooth decay. Therefore, they are not recommended for children."
The doctor points out the "risks of milk chocolate because it contains a high sugar content and many additives." She added: "In general, all sweets are harmful to teeth. Therefore, it is important to practice moderation and not always give them to children. The safest candies in this respect are dark chocolate and natural fruit jelly (marzipan). Additionally, consuming other sweets in excess will contribute, to some extent, to the development of tooth decay."
The doctor elaborates: "Sweets are harmful not only to teeth but to the entire body. Therefore, we must always remember that sweets after a meal are an additional food and not a substitute for a meal. It is better to consume sweets once a day between meals. Moreover, after eating sweets, it is essential to brush teeth, and if that is not possible, at least rinse with water to minimize their negative effects."
