Dr. Andrei Dorukhov, an associate professor in the Department of Organic Chemistry at the Russian University of Technology, emphasizes that medications should only be taken with water. According to him, drugs should be taken with room temperature water because other beverages can either reduce or enhance the effect of the medication, which will negatively impact health in both cases. He states: "Tea and coffee contain caffeine and tannins. Since some components react with tannins to form insoluble substances that are not absorbed into the bloodstream, the medication will simply exit the body without providing any benefit."
According to him, grapefruit juice is incompatible with many medications, while pineapple and grape juice can cause an increase in blood pressure when taken with psychoactive stimulants. Tomato juice reduces the effect of sulfonamide antibiotics. Carbonated drinks irritate the stomach lining and reduce the effectiveness of medications.
Dorukhov points out that milk is also unsuitable for taking medications because it hinders the absorption of various antibiotics, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, omeprazole, and thyroid medications. Additionally, it is never advisable to take medications with alcohol.
