The U.S. women's national team set a record for the most points scored in a Basketball World Cup, achieving a decisive victory over South Korea 145-69 in the first round on Monday in Sydney, Australia. Eight American players out of 12 scored ten points or more, with Brianna Jones leading the way with 24 points and 8 rebounds.
The American team has dominated this championship in recent years, winning five times in the last six editions, and holds the record with ten titles compared to six for the former Soviet Union.
The previous record was held by Brazil, which beat Malaysia 143-50 in the 1990 edition, while South Korea scored 136 points against Kenya in 1994, France scored 131 points against Tunisia in 2002, and Bulgaria scored 130 points against Malaysia in 1990.
Along with the United States, which had already secured a spot in the quarter-finals, France, Belgium, China, and Canada also qualified. The top four teams advance to the quarter-finals from each of two groups, each consisting of six teams, in a tournament that concludes on October 1st.
