For the first time, Egypt announced the entry of a two-deck train into service, according to the National Authority for Tunnels. The DESIRO train, intended for transporting goods and passengers, is the second type of train manufactured as part of the rapid train project. It operates at a speed of 160 km/h and was designed for Egypt, having been tested in the city of "Krefeld," Germany.
The director of the rapid train project, Major Ahmed Farouk, revealed in press statements that the trial operation of the electric rapid train will take place at the end of this year, noting that this type of train will provide distinguished services to passengers. He explained that it will contribute to the development plans of all governorates, emphasizing that the two-deck train will facilitate passenger transport.
Moreover, he pointed out that the first line of the rapid electric train network extends from Ain Sokhna to Marsa Matrouh, the second line extends from Fayoum to Beni Suef and then to Abu Simbel, while the third line runs from Qena to Safaga. He clarified that the train serves tourist, agricultural, and industrial areas.
At the beginning of this year, the Egyptian Ministry of Transport and Communications received a contract including rapid electric trains. This contract features a train from the Desiro HC category, consisting of upper and lower decks, making it the first two-deck train to operate in Egypt. This train is manufactured by Siemens Mobility in Germany and is imported as part of a total of 94 regional trains that will operate on electric lines.
Additionally, the DESIRO train is the first rapid regional train in Egypt at the New Administrative Capital station and is the second type of electric train imported from abroad. Notably, the key specifications of the double-decker train include a maximum operational speed of 160 kilometers per hour, a total capacity of 849 passengers, and it is equipped with 24 CCTV cameras, as well as easily accessible electrical sockets and USB ports.
