6-Year-Old Child Travels Alone to the Wrong Destination

A 6-year-old boy boarded a flight for a Christmas holiday trip to visit his grandmother in southwest Florida, but he found himself on a different plane and ended up in Orlando, Florida, about 160 miles away. Grandmother Maria Ramos arrived at Fort Myers Southwest Florida International Airport to greet her grandson, who was traveling alone for the first time from Philadelphia, only to be informed by airport officials that her grandson was not on the Spirit Airlines flight. Maria said, “I ran inside the plane (and reached) the flight attendant, asking her: Where is my grandson?” She told "WINK News": “He was handed over to you in Philadelphia?” The attendant replied, “No, I don’t have any children with me.” Later, the grandmother received a phone call from her grandson from Orlando Airport informing her that he had landed.

A statement indicated that the boy was under the care and supervision of an airline employee the entire time, despite mistakenly boarding a flight to Orlando. The statement said that once the mistake was discovered, the airline informed the family. It added, “We take the safety and responsibility of transporting all our guests seriously and are conducting an internal investigation. We apologize to the family for this experience.”
