The Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Karachay-Cherkess Republic in southern Russia announced the deaths of two police officers and the injury of four others in an attack on a traffic police point in the republic. The attack was carried out by five armed individuals, who were neutralized at the scene.
According to the statement from the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs: "The clash resulted in the deaths of two security personnel from Kurgan Region, and two local traffic police officers, a member of the National Guard of the Karachay-Cherkess Republic, and an official from the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Kurgan Region were injured. The five attackers were eliminated."
The statement added that the assault took place in the village of Mara Iyagi at 23:20 on Sunday. The attackers arrived at the scene in a vehicle, threw an explosive device towards the police, and opened fire with automatic weapons. Police officers responded by firing at the attackers, one of whom was wearing an explosive belt that detonated.
The statement also noted that several homemade improvised explosive devices were found in the possession of the attackers.
