The Group of Seven countries announced that they have made significant progress in reducing their reliance on Russian energy sources, particularly gas. In a statement following the meeting of energy and environment ministers in Turin, Italy, on Tuesday, they said: "We note that the Group of Seven countries has made significant progress in reducing dependence on Russian energy sources, including through energy savings and reduced gas demand."
The statement indicated that "the countries are striving to end their substantial reliance on Russian gas as soon as possible," emphasizing that "reducing Russian energy revenues is an important part of these countries' support for Ukraine." The group also criticized "Russia's control over the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine," stating that this poses serious risks to nuclear safety and security.
The group reaffirmed its commitment to reducing reliance on Russian supplies of civilian nuclear-related products, including promoting a diverse range of fuel supply sources free from "Russian influence," while assisting countries seeking to diversify their supplies. It emphasized its commitment to achieving a fully carbon-free energy sector by 2035, while also reducing methane emissions. The statement noted that global investment in renewable energy is expected to double to over $60 billion by 2030.
