South Korea Repays Lebanon's Debt of Loyalty: Aid of $4.4 Million

The Embassy of the Republic of South Korea stated that its government "has announced its decision to contribute approximately $4.4 million to Lebanon for the year 2023. This aid aims to support the most vulnerable Lebanese citizens and refugees, as well as to build the capacities of Lebanese institutions and local communities." The statement highlighted that "this support will include: medical and food assistance, livelihood empowerment, renewable energy, solid waste management, street lighting, landmine removal, and capacity building."

Korean Ambassador to Lebanon Il Park said, "After three years of unprecedented crisis, the most vulnerable Lebanese citizens are living in poverty that no longer allows them to meet their basic needs. As Korea, we recognize the importance of working together as a community and showing solidarity with those who are suffering. We offer the same solidarity and spirit of compassion to those who are suffering in Lebanon."

Park also recalled the "financial support of $50,000 that the Lebanese government provided to Korea during the Korean War to protect freedom and democracy in the country." The statement clarified that "this contribution is in addition to Korea's efforts to support peace and stability in southern Lebanon through the Korean battalion of UNIFIL, which also works to enhance the capacities of local institutions and communities."
