Reopening of Egypt's Most Famous and Oldest Mosques

Egypt's Minister of Awqaf, Mohamed Mokhtar Gomaa, announced the reopening of Sayyidah Zainab Mosque after being closed for nearly two months for renovations. It was confirmed that the mosque has reopened for Friday prayers and resumed normal operations. The closure was due to the final stages of development work at the Sayyidah Zainab Mosque and the high volume of work, which necessitated the Cairo Awqaf Directorate to temporarily close the mosque to allow the executing agency to expedite the comprehensive renovation of the mosque and its adjacent areas.

During a meeting with the leaders of the religious guidance sector in Giza Governorate on Friday, in the presence of Hisham Amna, the Minister of Local Development, and Ahmed Rashed, the Governor of Giza, Gomaa stated that the total number of mosques that have been established, renovated, or developed and maintained during President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi's era reached 11,887 mosques, at a cost estimated at about 18 billion Egyptian pounds.

He noted that the reopening of Sayyidah Zainab Mosque follows the opening of Imam Hussein Mosque, Sayyidah Nafisa Mosque, Sayyidah Fatima Al-Nabawiyya Mosque, and Sayyidah Ruqayyah Mosque as part of the ongoing efforts to develop these mosques. Gomaa emphasized that Egypt is rich in houses of God and will remain, with God's permission, a stronghold of the faith. He also highlighted that the attention given to constructing houses of worship in Egypt includes intensifying religious activities and Quranic readings as well as focusing on their construction, development, and renovation.
