The emergency management said that at least five people lost their lives when a tornado and severe thunderstorms struck Michigan on Thursday evening, causing power outages for hundreds of thousands, downed trees, damaged homes, and disrupted traffic. The Kent County Sheriff's Office reported that three others died, including a young woman in her early twenties and two girls, one a one-year-old infant and the other three years old, in a weather-related traffic accident near Cedar Springs in western Michigan. Officials reported that the tornado, with winds reaching up to 145 kilometers per hour, swept through Ingham County and then into Livingston County on Thursday evening. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer posted on X (formerly Twitter), stating, "We have been working with local authorities throughout the night to assess the damage caused by the severe weather." She added that she would declare a state of emergency to help deliver resources to the affected areas as quickly as possible.
