Shooting Incident Near Home of Elected Turkish Official

According to Turkish channel "NTV," an unknown person opened fire near the home of Bulent Kara, the winner of the mayoral elections in the city of Giresun, northeastern Turkey. The television channel reported that, based on the information received, the gunman called Kara to the street near his home and fired shots in the air. The police, who arrived at the scene, arrested the suspect and launched an investigation into the incident to determine the motive for the shooting. For his part, Kara described the incident as "horrific" after going to the police station to file a complaint against the gunman. He added, "Last night we experienced a horrific incident. A man fired a gun in front of our house, and thankfully no one was hurt. We do not know who instigated the shooting, but our security forces intervened quickly and arrested the man. It is left to the police and judicial authorities." Voting in the municipal elections in Turkey took place last Sunday, and according to preliminary data, opposition mayors in major cities (Ankara, Istanbul, İzmir) retained their positions, with the Turkish Republican People's Party surpassing the ruling Justice and Development Party for the first time in 20 years.
