The spokesperson for Nigerian President Bola Tinubu announced today that the president will meet with U.S. President Joe Biden on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York next month. The General Assembly is scheduled to take place from September 18 to 26. Presidential spokesperson Ajuri Ngelale stated in a statement that Tinubu accepted the invitation delivered by U.S. Presidential Envoy and Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Molly Phee. The two presidents are expected to discuss the situation in Niger, as Tinubu, who currently chairs the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), collaborates with leaders of other West African nations to find a solution following the military council's seizure of power. Tinubu, who has embarked on the most ambitious reforms in Nigeria in decades, has called for an increase in U.S. investments in his country and for strengthened cooperation to defend democracy in West Africa amid rising coups in the region.
