The International Court of Justice revealed on Wednesday that Iran has filed a lawsuit against Canada in the United Nations-affiliated court, as Ottawa allows civil compensation claims to be raised in its courts against Tehran, due to what are described as acts of terrorism.
According to the lawsuit filed by Iran, published by the court, Canada's actions violate the state immunity guaranteed by international law.
The filing of the lawsuit comes just over a week after the Canadian government announced sanctions against Iranian judges, accusing them of committing human rights violations.
Canada severed diplomatic relations with Iran in 2012 and listed it as a state sponsor of terrorism.
Last year, a court in Ontario awarded CAD 107 million (USD 83.94 million), plus interest, to the families of six individuals who died when the Iranian Revolutionary Guard shot down a Ukrainian International Airlines plane near Tehran in 2020, killing all 176 passengers on board.
