Hair loss is often associated with aging, but previous studies have shown otherwise. One of the causes of this problem is the excessive consumption of sugary drinks and energy drinks, according to the latest studies. A team from Tsinghua University in Beijing found that those who drink sodas and sports drinks are at a higher risk.
Research published in the journal Nutrients revealed that these men were consuming between one to three liters of these drinks each week. It was noted that men who drank more than one sugary drink per day were 42% more likely to experience hair loss compared to those who never consumed these drinks. On average, men reporting hair loss consumed 12 sugary drinks per week, compared to seven drinks weekly for men who did not experience hair loss.
The researchers studied the habits of over 1,000 Chinese men aged between 18 and 45 over a period of four months. During this time, they had to report their dietary habits along with their mental health history. The researchers noted that not just beverages were studied; they also found that men who consumed more fast food and ate fewer vegetables had a higher chance of experiencing hair loss. They mentioned that those with a history of issues like anxiety were also at greater risk.
Experts previously stated that a healthy diet is key to vibrant locks and preventing hair loss. Dermatologist Sharon Wong, based in London, said, "Hair follicle cells are the second fastest dividing cells in the body and require all the nutrients from a balanced diet. This includes lean proteins, carbohydrates, healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals, but there is no superfood for hair. Since hair is not essential for survival, the body does not prioritize the use of nutrients for hair growth. Nutritional deficiencies and crash diets are common causes of hair loss."
The National Health Service (NHS) clarifies that it is normal to lose hair, as we lose between 50 to 100 strands daily without noticing. Most of the time, there is no need for concern, but sometimes it can be a sign of a worrying medical condition. A doctor should be consulted if experiencing sudden hair loss, bald patches on the scalp, or significant hair loss. It is also important to seek medical attention if feeling itchiness or burning sensations on the scalp, or if concerned about hair loss.
