The White House to Unveil Expanded Measures to Address AI Risks

President Joe Biden is set to decide on a wide range of measures related to artificial intelligence today, Monday, as he seeks to enhance safety and protect consumers, workers, and minorities from the risks associated with this technology. The executive order to be revealed by Biden is the latest step taken by the U.S. administration to establish standards concerning artificial intelligence at a time when developments in capabilities and popularity are advancing rapidly in an environment where regulatory frameworks are insufficient. Companies utilizing this technology, such as OpenAI, Alphabet, and Meta Platforms, had previously agreed to voluntarily label AI-generated content to make the use of this technology safer. However, the new executive order anticipated to be unveiled by Biden today goes beyond such commitments. It requires developers of AI systems that pose risks to U.S. national security, economy, public health, or safety to share safety test results with the U.S. government in accordance with the Defense Production Act before allowing these technologies to be released to the public. According to the White House, the decision will also direct relevant agencies to establish standards for these tests and address risks related to chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and cybersecurity aspects.
