UN Committee on the Rights of the Child: There Are No Winners in a War That Kills Thousands of Children

The UN Committee on the Rights of the Child emphasized that "there are no winners in a war that kills thousands of children," while condemning "serious human rights violations in the Gaza Strip," according to "Russia Today." The independent committee that monitors the compliance of countries with the Convention on the Rights of the Child called in a statement for "an end to the harm being inflicted on the lives of children in the occupied Palestinian territory."

It added, "We lend our voice to those calling for an immediate ceasefire, and we urge the release of child hostages and those who care for them." The committee explained that "despite the protection that international law should provide to all children, devastating reports of actions prohibited by international humanitarian law have emerged during the first month of this war, including mutilation, injury, abduction, forced displacement, and deprivation of medical care, nutrition, and water."

The committee affirmed, "According to Article 38 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, states are obligated to respect and ensure respect for the rules of international humanitarian law and to take all possible measures to ensure the protection and care of children affected by armed conflicts." The committee urged all parties "to allow all humanitarian convoys to enter the Gaza Strip and provide humanitarian assistance to all children in need, as required by international law."
