Sudanese cities are witnessing an escalation in fighting today, Monday, with no signs of a ceasefire between the warring parties in the country. In the latest developments, the artillery of the Sudanese army has intensified its strikes this morning on the positions of the Rapid Support Forces in the suburbs north of Khartoum Bahri. Artillery shells have been observed being fired by the army targeting the movements of the Rapid Support Forces, which have been besieged for weeks in the northern areas of Bahri near the oil refinery in the Gili area.
This comes as the cities of Khartoum and Omdurman experience relative calm in the pace of military operations over the past few hours. Residents in the Daradar area of White Nile state, south of Khartoum, reported the killing of six local inhabitants by the fire of the Rapid Support Forces after they entered the area. Meanwhile, thousands of residents in El Gezira state adjacent to Khartoum continue to suffer due to the expansion of the Rapid Support Forces in villages within the state and the western regions of the nearby Sennar state, forcing residents to leave their areas for fear of abuses that have been reported by numerous village and local committees in El Gezira regarding the citizens by the Rapid Support Forces.
Fighting broke out unexpectedly in mid-April 2023 between the Sudanese army led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the Rapid Support Forces led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo "Hemedti," after weeks of rising tensions between the two sides while military and civilian parties were finalizing the details of an internationally supported political process.
