Brussels University President Anneemie Schaus stated to Belgian radio on Wednesday that the university intends to file a police complaint against students involved in a protest that escalated into violence regarding the Israeli war in Gaza, including an assault on the president of the Jewish Student Union. The Belgian public broadcasting service for French speakers reported, "A complaint will be filed due to acts of violence, particularly against the president of the Jewish Student Union in Belgium, and I cannot tolerate that." She added that the complaint will seek to hold those responsible for these actions accountable.
She noted that calm returned to the university campus on Tuesday following security forces' intervention to halt what witnesses told local media was an assault on the president of the Jewish Student Union, accompanied by anti-Semitic chants from a small number of protesters. The Jewish Student Union in Belgium condemned the attack. The union president was not seriously injured. According to the Belgian newspaper Le Soir, "students are still occupying some areas of the university, and dialogue between them and the university is ongoing, with no immediate plans to remove the occupying students."
