Chinese state media reported today, Thursday, that President Xi Jinping stated that Beijing wants to halt the war between Israel and Hamas as soon as possible, adding that the country is ready to work with Arab governments to reach a lasting solution to the conflict. The media said that Xi also declared that a ceasefire has become "urgent" and must be announced as soon as possible to prevent the escalation of the conflict or it spiraling out of control.
Xi made these remarks following his meeting with Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, who was the only senior representative from the Middle East to attend the Belt and Road Forum in China this week. According to the media, Xi informed Madbouly that China supports Egypt's efforts to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza. These statements are among the first made by the Chinese president regarding the conflict that erupted on October 7.
On a related note, Egypt and the United States agreed on Wednesday to allow humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip "in a sustainable manner" through the Sinai Peninsula. Separately, Xi also expressed that China wishes to work with Egypt to enhance cooperation in infrastructure, agricultural technology, and renewable energy, adding that he will encourage Chinese companies to invest there.
