The brother of an opposition candidate was killed and four others were injured in clashes between opponents and supporters of a newly elected mayor from the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) in a predominantly Kurdish area of southeastern Turkey. Supporters of the AKP, led by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, clashed with supporters of the opposition Democracy and Progress Party in the Birvari district of Siirt on Tuesday evening, following local elections held on Sunday, in which the opposition performed well across Turkey. The AKP candidate won the Birvari mayoralty with 52 percent of the votes, while the Democracy and Progress Party candidate came in second with about 40 percent. The governor's office reported that five were injured in the clashes, with one later dying from his injuries. The deputy chairman of the Democracy and Progress Party, Mohammad Amin Ikman, stated that the deceased is the brother of the party's candidate. The Siirt governor's office noted that the police are investigating the incident and have arrested six individuals, adding that a curfew was imposed in the Birvari area until Thursday morning for security reasons.
