A video showing a celebration in a Tunisian school honoring a student by one of her teachers for wearing a hijab has sparked controversy in Tunisia. Some view this move as discriminatory and divisive among students based on appearance and religion, criticizing the teacher for blending religious and educational matters. Others see it as an attempt to encourage and promote positive behavior.
In the video, which has been viewed by thousands on social media, the teacher enters the classroom holding a cake with the inscription "Congratulations on your hijab," and places it in front of the student amidst applause and cheers from the other students.
Following the video's circulation, several activists launched a widespread attack on the teacher, expressing their displeasure with this behavior, which they consider outside the bounds of the educational process and a risk to the educational environment, calling for his punishment.
Commenting on this, activist Mohamed Tawzi stated that what the teacher did is "a crime punishable by law," adding that the teacher "exploited his moral authority over the students to impose his ideas on them." He mentioned, "As a guardian, if my daughter were in that class, I would have filed a legal complaint." Blogger Yaqin Balqis emphasized that wearing the hijab is a personal matter and that the teacher has no right to intervene in it.
