America Offers Condolences on the Death of Iranian President

The U.S. Department of State expressed its formal condolences today, Monday, on the death of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and other officials in a helicopter crash. State Department spokesman Matthew Miller stated in a statement: "As Iran selects a new president, we reaffirm our support for the Iranian people and their struggle for human rights and fundamental freedoms." Miller revealed that "Iran requested assistance from Washington following the helicopter crash that carried President Ebrahim Raisi in a mountainous area near the border with Azerbaijan, but the United States ultimately was unable to provide assistance for logistical reasons." He emphasized that "Raisi's death did not change the fundamental U.S. position toward Iran."
