Jamal, the Barcelona winger, has become the youngest player in the history of the Spanish national team to score a goal at the age of 16 years and 57 days during his debut in a resounding 7-1 victory against Georgia in the Euro 2024 qualifiers on Friday. Jamal came on as a substitute in the 44th minute to replace the injured Marco Asensio, breaking the record previously held by his Barcelona teammate Gavi, who was 17 years and 62 days old when he played his first international match in 2021. Gavi had broken Angel Zubieta's record (17 years and 284 days) that stood for 85 years.
Jamal scored Spain's seventh goal, the reigning UEFA Nations League champions, with a precise touch inside the penalty area. He, who became the youngest player to make his debut for Barcelona in an official match last month, received his first call-up to represent Spain when coach Luis de la Fuente selected him for the matches against Georgia and Cyprus this week in Group A of the Euro qualifiers.
He has emerged as an important figure in Barcelona's attack at the start of the current season and was named man of the match in the 4-3 victory over Villarreal in La Liga last month. Jamal was born and raised in Spain to a Moroccan father and has played for Spain's youth national teams.
