Information Division Arrests Thief Who Evaded Capture for 5 Months

The General Directorate of Internal Security Forces - Public Relations Division reported that as a result of the continuous follow-up by the Internal Security Forces in tracking down those involved in crimes who had gone into hiding after committing their offenses, a suspect named M.A. (born in 1993, Ethiopian) was arrested on March 24, 2023, in Hazmieh, within the home of her friend, who was also arrested. She was involved in the theft of a metal safe from the residence of her employers in the New Soueireh area. Part of the stolen money was seized and handed over to the claiming party.

As a result of ongoing field follow-up and inquiries conducted by the relevant divisions at that time, it was revealed that others were involved in the theft, including Y.M. (born in 1998, Syrian), who fled to Syria after the theft. The Information Division was tasked with monitoring and arresting him. Following the information-gathering efforts conducted by patrols of the Division, indications emerged that he had illegally re-entered Lebanese territory and was residing in Choueifat under the assumed identity of a Lebanese citizen.

The Directorate added, "On August 16, 2023, after precise observation and monitoring in Choueifat, patrols from the Division successfully located and arrested him, seizing a 'plastic' pistol, an ID card not belonging to him, and an amount of 100 US dollars. During the investigation, he confessed to his involvement in the mentioned theft, concealing the stolen money, and fleeing to Syria with his brother, who was the third accomplice in the theft, indicating that his share from the operation was ten thousand US dollars. He also mentioned that he had entered the country illegally a few days prior and was working in the field of human smuggling illegally, assuming the identity of a Lebanese person whose ID he had found. He also admitted to drug use."

Legal proceedings have been initiated against him, and he has been detained and referred to the relevant authority based on the judiciary's instructions.
