Qatar's Prime Minister: Our Position on Assad Has Not Changed

Qatar's Prime Minister, Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, confirmed that his country's stance towards the Syrian president has not changed. He stated, "We clearly expressed our position when the decision was made to re-invite Syria to the Arab League; we still do not see anything that qualifies him for a return to the Arab League. We do not want to break the consensus on the decision; at the end of the day, one boat will not make a difference. We are trying to clarify our position, and other Arab countries have a different perspective than ours. We did not wish to object to this decision in the same session."

He continued, "Nonetheless, we clarify that normalization between Arab countries and Syria will be a decision for each country individually. We stand by our position; the Emir of Qatar mentioned this in his speech (at the United Nations General Assembly) that we cannot tolerate war criminals. We cannot witness the continued suffering of the Syrian people while granting the government concessions for return and normalization."

The Qatari Prime Minister affirmed that "the only way forward is to reach a political solution according to international resolutions," noting that "UN Security Council Resolution 2254 clearly highlights the political transition and political solution, and this is not happening. We cannot reward anyone for not implementing Security Council resolutions."
