Postponement of Israeli Government Session to Discuss Recruitment Law

Postponement of Israeli Government Session to Discuss Recruitment Law

The Hebrew newspaper "Haaretz" reported the postponement of the government session dedicated to discussing the recruitment law without specifying a new date for holding it amidst opposition from religious Jews. The Israeli Broadcasting Authority "Kan" stated that Defense Minister Yoav Gallant instructed his office not to cooperate with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office regarding the recruitment law. The authority added that Gallant, who is visiting the United States and opposes the proposed law, decided not to allow professional cooperation within the Ministry of Defense's office "to prevent the law from being approved in the government in his absence." The Supreme Court had given Netanyahu's government until March 31 of this year to reach an understanding on recruiting Haredim and obligating them to military service, with currently 157,000 individuals eligible for conscription, but the army does not draft them, and they are considered, according to the law, to be evading military service.
