U.S. Agency for International Development Launches Educational Support Project in Lebanon

To improve student learning outcomes in Lebanon, on August 1, 2023, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) awarded a contract to RTI International, a nonprofit research institute and leading international development organization, to implement the new "Kitaabi 3" program, which will last for five years and has a value of $96.9 million. This project aims to support the educational system in Lebanon. In collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education and the Educational Center for Research and Development, the "Kitaabi 3" project will focus on enhancing literacy, numeracy, social-emotional learning, and holistic education outcomes for students across the country. The project will also provide life skills and career guidance for students in middle and high school.

Juli Southfield, Director of USAID in Lebanon, commented on the launch of this program, stating: "We are excited to introduce this new project that will continue to improve the quality of education throughout Lebanon. The 'Kitaabi 3' program reflects our belief that high-quality education paves the way for greater economic growth and transformational change. It is one of the many chapters in the historic and ongoing partnership between the United States and Lebanon aimed at supporting young students in this country and preparing them for a brighter future."

She added: "'Kitaabi 3' will provide technical support to both the Ministry of Education and Higher Education and the Educational Center for Research and Development to enhance inclusive curricula, research, and performance evaluation capacity. 'Kitaabi 3' aims to improve learning outcomes for approximately 350,000 students, enhance teaching practices for around 25,000 teachers, and increase student retention rates in 1,200 public and low-cost private schools, in addition to strengthening the educational system to enhance access to more equitable educational opportunities for the most marginalized groups and children with special needs."

She continued: "Since 2013, the U.S. government, through USAID, has invested more than $500 million to support the education sector in Lebanon. From establishing libraries in classrooms, providing virtual lessons, educational kits, and summer schools, to offering university support and merit-based full scholarships, USAID has equipped students with the tools and skills necessary to gain a comprehensive learning experience and contribute to Lebanon's growth and prosperity."
