Former leader of the "Progressive Socialist Party," Walid Jumblatt, affirmed today that "the Druze of Syria, like their brothers across Syria, want freedom and a dignified life away from the tyrannical regime of Bashar al-Assad." He added via his account on the platform "X": "The Druze of Sweida, led by Sheikh Hikmat al-Hajri, are an integral part of the Syrian people who want freedom and dignity while being very cautious of the voices of the Zionist right like Walid Phares and his group."
In response, former minister Wiam Wahhab commented on Jumblatt's tweet on "X," saying: "O Walid, I say this with love, Sheikh Hikmat al-Hajri is one of the leaders of Sweida and a respected spiritual leader, but he is not the leader of Sweida. There are other prominent sheikhs and leaders in Sweida, and we support them when they unite on one opinion. If you want consensus, we can meet at Sheikh Amin's place and discuss. Solo stances are not allowed."
Earlier, Walid Phares had tweeted on "X": "Free Sweida?" There is a trend to declare a "Druze Free Zone" in Sweida in southern Syria. Sweida borders the Jordanian border to the south and is not far from the American base in Tanf to the east and the Golan Heights to the west. There are reports about the establishment of a self or local security and political administration and the rejection of Hezbollah and other Iranian militias in the area. The possibility for Free Sweida to get a significant "No-Fly Zone" from America is very high, but it is not confirmed; the decision is being considered in Washington.
