Sydney McLaughlin delivered a remarkable performance, winning the 400-meter race at the American Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon, on Saturday. She recorded the best time of the year at 48.74 seconds.
McLaughlin's standout performance at Hayward Field comes a year after she won the 400-meter hurdles with a world record last year.
Brittany Wilson finished second, just 0.05 seconds behind McLaughlin, while Talitha Diggs secured third place with a time of 49.93 seconds.
McLaughlin now has the opportunity to compete in both the 400-meter and 400-meter hurdles at the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, which starts on August 19, should she choose to do so.
In a post-race television interview, McLaughlin said, "Greats always push themselves, and I wanted to be one of them, so I pushed myself out of my comfort zone, and I'm happy to be here."
Nia Ali, the Olympic silver medalist, won the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 12.37 seconds, while Kendra Harrison came in second with a time of 12.42 seconds.
Nikki Hiltz triumphed in the 1500-meter race, finishing in four minutes and 3.10 seconds, while Olympic champion and world champion Athing Mu finished second with a time of four minutes and 3.44 seconds. Yared Nuguse won the men's equivalent of the same race with a time of three minutes and 34.90 seconds.
Christian Coleman showed no signs of fatigue as he progressed in the 200-meter heats with a time of 20.06 seconds, just one day after finishing second in the 100-meter final.
The American Championships conclude today, Sunday.
