MP Ibrahim Kanaan confirmed that "we cannot continue living in a situation where everyone is acting for their own benefit," emphasizing that there is a law stipulating the acceptance or rejection of a grant only by a decision from the Cabinet, especially when it involves one billion euros, regarding which we have not seen its terms or documents.
Kanaan, speaking via the "OTV" channel, urged the government to "take responsibility, convene, and review the European grant and its conditions, and reject it if it contradicts Lebanon's supreme interest and does not set a timeline for the return of displaced persons."
He stressed that "the return of displaced persons is a vital and strategic issue central to Lebanon's existence, and it should not be a matter of division. In the past, we were accused of racism, so what prevents them from making decisions that align with Lebanon's interest today?"
In a previous post on his X account, Kanaan stated that "regardless of the ongoing debate about the European grant, the government is obligated under Article 52 of the Public Accounting Law to decide on accepting any grant exceeding 250 million Lebanese pounds or to reject it by a Cabinet decision."
He added, "The government's authority in this regard is not absolute, as it is bound by the supreme national interest, and any conflict with this interest necessitates the rejection of this grant." Kanaan asked, "So where is the European grant with its documents and conditions, including those related to the return of Syrian displaced persons to their country, and where is the government collectively in this matter?!"
