Egyptian Referee Attacked in African Confederation Championship (Video)

An Egyptian referee was attacked during a match in the African Confederation Championship by players from one of the teams, prompting the Egyptian Football Association to request an urgent investigation. International referee Mohamed Maarouf was assaulted by players from the Libyan team Abu Salim after the match, in protest against his decisions regarding the stoppage time.

In the match between Morocco's RS Berkane and Libya's Abu Salim, which took place yesterday, a draw of 2-2 was the score until 10 minutes of extra time were added. RS Berkane scored a goal in the 97th minute, which was disallowed by the referee, allowing the match to continue until the Moroccan team scored the winning goal in the 105th minute. Players from Abu Salim protested, accusing the referee of improperly extending the stoppage time by an additional 5 minutes.

The players from the Libyan team attacked the Egyptian referee, forcing security personnel to intervene and escort him off the field safely. The Egyptian Football Association, led by Jamal Allam, sent a letter to the African Football Confederation, condemning and denouncing the assaults on the Egyptian referee.
