Residents of the Turkish city of Adana woke up to a foul odor permeating the area before discovering the remains of hundreds of slaughtered donkeys in a water canal. Turkish media reported that many remains of horse and donkey meat were found in an irrigation canal in the Ali Hujali region of the Yuregir district of Adana province.
It was noted that after the horses and donkeys were slaughtered, the remaining parts were placed in bags and discarded into the pond. When the unpleasant smell spread, citizens alerted the specialized teams to the situation. The teams that arrived in the area were unable to identify the party responsible for dumping the remains of horse and donkey meat, but they conducted cleanup efforts in the area.
Residents living around the site expressed their outrage at the situation. Ismail Yildiz, a local resident, stated, "We face this issue all the time, and this is not the first time. They throw the bones of horses and donkeys and gather them here. Since they scrape off the meat and discard the bones, there is an extremely foul odor." He pointed out that "the neighborhood below the canal is very much exposed to the smell, and this diminishes the value of the city."
Adana is a city very famous for kebabs, amid fears that the mass slaughter of donkeys could be related to the use of their meat in restaurants.
