Fire has played a crucial role in human life for thousands of years, allowing us to cook, build, and keep warm. However, this essential element has also been the cause of significant destruction, as evidenced by the increase in wildfires around the world, a phenomenon attributed to climate change, according to the United Nations Environment Programme.
The witness and documenter of this trend, multimedia artist Kevin Kully, based in Los Angeles, has spent the last decade documenting fires, both from wildfires and those controlled. Kully stated, "I photograph this type of disaster and try to make it almost beautiful. In this way, you can draw attention to it." Kully's work aims to shed light on our relationship with the environment and the impacts of climate change. He focuses heavily on the elements of earth, wind, water, and fire, enhanced by the use of a light source.
Kully believes that "light gives specific significance to the simplicity of things and situations, highlighting things that might go unnoticed in daily life." He remarked, "I have worked with light for 25 years in various ways," including the use of lasers, electric lamps, fireworks, flares, and even smoke columns.
