Norwegian police reported today, Thursday, that one person has died and five others were injured when a helicopter crashed into the sea off the west coast of Norway. Officials stated that the Sikorsky S-92 helicopter, operated by the Norwegian company Bristow, was on a training mission for search and rescue when the accident occurred yesterday, Wednesday. The police noted in a statement today that rescue teams retrieved the six individuals on board from the water, but one was later pronounced dead at the hospital. They added that one survivor sustained minor injuries, while the injuries of the other four vary. The cause of the accident is not immediately known. Sikorsky, the manufacturer of the helicopter, stated on Wednesday that safety is their top priority and they are ready to support the investigation. Sikorsky is a subsidiary of Lockheed Martin. Energy company Equinor clarified that the helicopter specializes in search and rescue and typically provides services to platforms in the company’s Oseberg oil and gas field in the North Sea.
