Baghdad: Crackdown on Drug Trafficking and Transportation Network

The Iraqi Ministry of Defense's General Directorate of Intelligence and Security announced on Tuesday the dismantling of a major drug trafficking and transportation network in Baghdad. The ministry stated in a press release that "the operation was carried out following precise intelligence information from the Baghdad Intelligence and Security Directorate, which is part of the General Directorate of Intelligence and Security, indicating the existence of a main network specialized in drug trafficking and transportation intending to transfer narcotic substances from Al-Kut Governorate to Baghdad and distribute them in areas of the capital through representatives."

It added that "immediately, the information was corroborated, and in a well-planned ambush, the agency's teams were able to infiltrate the network, lure its members, and arrest them red-handed in one of the capital's areas, seizing (1000) tramadol drug vials, (8000) narcotic pills, in addition to a light firearm. All legal measures were taken against them, and they were referred to the judiciary to receive their due punishment."
