Israeli settlers hung a donkey's head today, Wednesday, at one of the oldest Islamic cemeteries in Jerusalem, sparking outrage on social media. Activists shared photos and a video of the dead donkey's head placed on a stick among graves in the Bab al-Rahma cemetery, just meters from the eastern wall of Al-Aqsa Mosque.
In a statement, the Jerusalem governorate reported that "one of the settlers stormed Bab al-Rahma cemetery and hung a donkey's head on one of the graves." In response, the Israeli police stated that they had arrested a 35-year-old suspect from southern Israel in the Old City of Jerusalem, who was believed to have intended to violate law and public order by hanging a donkey's head in the Islamic cemetery near the Old City.
They added, "The suspect was arrested and then referred for investigation at the David Directorate on suspicion of animal abuse and disturbing public order," claiming he "has special needs."
