Contracted Professors at Lebanese University Declare Strike

The media office at Lebanese University announced that "in response to the statements issued by some groups of contracted hourly professors at Lebanese University calling for a general strike, as well as the demand to the Minister of Education to approve the file for permanent contracts, which should include all rightful claimants, and given that no statement has been issued by the Association of Permanent Professors at Lebanese University, and out of concern for the interests of students and to avoid creating a state of instability in the university's faculties and branches, the administration of Lebanese University declares that tomorrow will be a regular teaching day in all faculties, institutes, and branches of Lebanese University."

A committee representing the contracted professors held a meeting earlier today, Sunday, and stated in a press release: "Since the contracted professor is unable to continue under difficult economic conditions, and because this authority continues to innovate in a policy of procrastination regarding the matter of permanent contracts and other rights. Based on the results of the survey which overwhelmingly favored the declaration of a strike, the official committee of hourly contracted professors at Lebanese University announces a general strike starting from tomorrow, Monday, for a duration of one week across all faculties and branches of the university."

The statement continued: "The committee calls on all contracted professors to participate in the massive sit-in organized in front of the Ministry of Education and Higher Education at eleven o'clock next Tuesday, the 5th of the current month, in order to expedite the approval of the permanent contracts file and secure the rights of all contracted professors, represented by an increase in hourly wages and the provision of productivity and transportation allowances."

Lastly, the committee urges the Association of Permanent Professors at Lebanese University, the Council of Delegates, the University Employees Association, and our dear students to participate in this sit-in to alleviate the grievances faced by contracted professors at Lebanese University.
