Paris: Mysterious Tunnel Discovered Near Prison

French authorities discovered a mysterious tunnel near a prison south of Paris during routine electrical work, although police sources stated that it does not appear to be part of an escape plan. A police source indicated that the tunnel was found on Tuesday by a technician from the company "Enedis," which manages France's electricity distribution network, while working "in a well for electrical connections" about 450 meters from La Santé prison. The technician reported finding "bags of rubble and a bed" at the site.

Guillaume Durand, an official from the fourteenth district of the French capital where the prison is located, expressed doubt about the existence of a detailed escape plan, explaining that "the tunnel is four meters long and ends in a dead end on Rue de la Santé, but over 500 meters from the prison." He added that "police believe this tunnel is related to the work of secret explorers of the catacombs, which are underground passages where the dead were buried or where their remains and bones were kept," noting that officials sent an engineer to the site to fill in the hole.

The catacombs in Paris, which form a massive underground cemetery, are one of the city's most popular attractions, drawing around 500,000 visitors annually.
