Title: Iraq... Close to the Addition of 50 New Locomotives to the Fleet

The Iraqi Ministry of Transport reported today, Monday, the number of factories and train maintenance workshops in the country, while confirming the imminent addition of 50 new equipped locomotives to the Iraqi fleet. The director of media and relations at the ministry, Maitham Al-Safi, stated that "the factories of the Iraqi Republic Railways are designed to accommodate 250 mainline locomotives and 50 shunting locomotives with the latest engineering designs."

Al-Safi added that "the company’s factories for locomotive maintenance include the Shalajiya factories in Baghdad, the Al-Samawa factories in the Central Euphrates region, as well as the Beiji factories in the Eastern region and the Al-Qaim factories in the Western region, in addition to secondary maintenance workshops located along the Iraqi railway network."

He explained that "the locomotives that were previously operational included 72 French locomotives, 82 German locomotives, in addition to 50 Chinese locomotives, 30 Russian locomotives, and 54 Spanish locomotives," noting that "the number of operational locomotives currently stands at 30." He mentioned that "it is expected that the arrival of the 50 new locomotives will bring the total number of operational locomotives to 80."
