Eight-year-old Eid Al-Otaibi captured the attention of visitors and participants at the Al-Kharj Falconry Competition with his remarkable talent in training falcons, despite his young age. Al-Otaibi, recognized as the youngest "malaweh" (falcon trainer) in the Gulf Cooperation Council countries at the event, expressed his joy in participating in this gathering that includes over 900 falconers. He mentioned his aspiration to become one of the best practitioners of the falconry hobby in the future.
He explained that "malaweh" is an essential method used to train falcons and helps to enhance their fitness for hunting. The term "malaweh" derives from the Arabic word for waving, indicating a gesture to call and attract attention. He noted that several methods are employed in malaweh, including using feathers from some of the falcons' preferred prey.
It is worth mentioning that the Al-Kharj Falconry Competition began last Saturday amidst extensive preparations at the site, which spans 200,000 square meters in Exit 6 in Al-Kharj Governorate. The event was organized by the Riyadh Municipality in conjunction with the Falcon Club, and features various activities including folk performances, workshops, cultural seminars, and heritage sessions aimed at different age groups. The organization of the competition supports the Riyadh Municipality's commitment to preserving authentic cultural heritage, encouraging falcon owners and enthusiasts, and furthering efforts to promote social responsibility while supporting cultural, sports, and social activities.
