American authorities reported that "a police officer in Philadelphia shot a dog dead in West Philadelphia after the dog attacked a 53-year-old man in the street." The incident occurred at the intersection of Vermont Street and Union Street in the Mantua neighborhood of West Philadelphia around 10:15 AM. According to the police, the officer who shot the Cane Corso dog was on patrol when a civilian reported that there were four stray dogs in the street.
The police stated, "When the officer arrived at the intersection, he found the 53-year-old man being attacked by the dogs," noting that the officer attempted to use the siren to distract the dogs, but they continued to attack the man. The officer then exited his police vehicle and fired several shots, resulting in the death of one dog, while the other three fled the scene.
The police added: "The man sustained injuries all over his body and was transported to the hospital, where his condition is stable," indicating that the body camera was not active at the time of the incident. The officer has been placed on administrative duty, according to Philadelphia Police policy, pending the outcome of the investigation.
