Death Toll from Hurricane Otis in Mexico Rises to 43

The governor of Guerrero state in Mexico, Evelyn Salgado, announced that the death toll from Hurricane Otis has risen to 43 people. The Mexican government had previously recorded 39 fatalities and 10 missing individuals as of Saturday due to the hurricane, a category five storm that struck Acapulco on the Pacific coast. Salgado stated in a post on the platform "X" that the updated death toll includes 33 men and 10 women. She added that electricity has been restored to 58% of Acapulco, and officials are working to assess the damage in the nearby cities of Acapulco and Coyuca de Benítez. She remarked, "These are days when the work does not stop," referring to the efforts of officials to distribute aid. Residents in areas still flooded have complained about a lack of government assistance, and many people are still searching for family members after losing contact with them when the storm hit on Wednesday. Hurricane Otis inundated the city with winds reaching 266 kilometers per hour, causing severe damage to homes, shops, and hotels, and disrupting communications.
