The Municipality of Bourj Hammoud stated that "Lebanon has witnessed a series of crimes in recent days, which have increased concerns among citizens troubled by events in the south, resulting in innocent victims. This was followed by varied reactions in type and intensity." In a statement, it mentioned that "in this context, a group of young people has taken to the streets on behalf of the families and youth of Bourj Hammoud, engaging in acts of vandalism and parading in the area while issuing warnings and threats. Misleading and inciting pages have also surfaced on social media, targeting both Lebanese and Syrians with slander and incitement, sparking sectarian tensions, all while claiming to represent a region with known authorities."
The municipality added: "In this situation, the Municipality of Bourj Hammoud wishes to clarify the following: First: The families of Bourj Hammoud are alarmed by the crimes and extend their deepest condolences to the families and companions of the victims; they support their demands for revealing the truths and punishing the perpetrators. Second: The Municipality of Bourj Hammoud has been diligent in fulfilling its duties within its legal capacities; requiring property owners to record lease contracts only after verifying the legality of residents and monitoring the status of commercial and legal establishments in coordination and cooperation with security forces and relevant administrations. Third: The entry of Syrians and foreigners into Lebanon and the regulation of their residency and work are under the jurisdiction of the official state agencies, especially the General Security and relevant ministries. These conditions are governed by legal texts, and no one has the right to impersonate or misuse state powers or exceed the laws and regulations. Fourth: There is no doubt that recent years have seen laxity in the application of laws and regulations concerning Syrian displacement in particular, and foreigners in general. This phenomenon is not limited to Bourj Hammoud but encompasses various Lebanese regions without exception. However, this requires the activation of the work of the responsible departments and administrations and does not justify the circumvention of laws and performing threats and violations in this manner."
