Latharo: The Possibility of Greater Escalation in the South Remains Constant

The head of the UNIFIL mission and its commander, General Aruldo Latharo, indicated that the possibility of greater escalation in the south remains constant. He noted that the fact that the conflict has largely been contained in areas close to the Blue Line is a sign that the parties do not wish to escalate, but there is always a risk of miscalculation, and UNIFIL is working hard to prevent that.

In an interview with Voice of Lebanon, Latharo expressed hope that the parties in the new year would find common ground to put an end to the exchange of fire and reach a political and diplomatic solution.

In response to a question about the possibility of any amendments to Resolution 1701, he confirmed that UNIFIL continues to implement its mandate under Resolution 1701, even though the resolution is under pressure; it remains as important as ever. He stated that they continue to implement it neutrally, explaining that any changes to this resolution will come from the Security Council. Until then, they will continue their work to restore stability and security along the Blue Line.

Latharo pointed out that UNIFIL and southern Lebanon faced numerous challenges in 2023, particularly in recent months. However, he noted several positive developments, including the reinforcement of peacekeepers' relationships with local communities in southern Lebanon through regular meetings, as well as the implementation of more than 4,000 projects, in addition to grants and support activities in health care, education, energy, water, and other areas. They also continued to work alongside the Lebanese Armed Forces, conducting joint patrols, operational activities, and training, working towards the ultimate goal of transferring current security tasks in the south to the Lebanese Armed Forces.

On the eve of the new year, Latharo addressed the people of the south, thanking them for their continued support. He expressed deep sorrow over the death and destruction caused by the current exchange of fire and emphasized the ongoing efforts to restore security and stability so that people can return to their homes and continue their lives. He urged all parties to cease fire and work towards achieving lasting peace, as this is the best way to prevent further destruction and harm.
