Meeting at the UN on Displaced Persons and Resolution 1701: Hasbani States Lebanon as a Transit Country, Not a Refuge

Deputy Ghassan Hasbani shared a video on the "X" platform following his meeting, along with a group of lawmakers, with UN Deputy Secretary-General Rosemary DiCarlo. He stated, "We met as part of a parliamentary delegation that included members from the extended opposition, conveying a clear message regarding the implementation of Resolution 1701 and the importance of its enforcement today, in light of the looming threat of widespread war on Lebanon. Additionally, we discussed the issue of Syrian displaced persons and the role of the United Nations in not encouraging further displacement into Lebanon, fulfilling its commitments in accordance with treaties and agreements signed with it, and respecting Lebanese sovereignty. This includes, first and foremost, reducing support for Syrian displaced persons who are illegally present on Lebanese territory, especially since Lebanon, in its treaties and agreements with the United Nations, is a transit country, not a country of asylum." He added, "No displaced person should be allowed to remain in Lebanon for more than a year if their status is not legal. Therefore, they should be repatriated to another country or back to their home country if there is an opportunity and the situation is safe." He concluded, "This is the message we conveyed directly, in line with everything we are currently doing within Lebanon as well, and it was delivered at the highest levels within the United Nations."
