Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman Win the 2023 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine

The Nobel Prize committee announced today, Monday, that "scientists Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman have won the prize for 2023 in recognition of their discoveries that contributed to the development of effective vaccines against the coronavirus." The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences stated: "We award the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for 2023 to Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman for their discoveries related to nucleoside base modifications that helped in the effective development of mRNA vaccines against COVID-19." This prize, one of the highest honors in the scientific community, is selected by the Nobel Association at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden and is valued at 11 million Swedish Krona (approximately one million dollars). The Nobel Prize in Medicine is the first to be announced, with the upcoming days set to reveal the winners of the remaining five Nobel prizes for this year.
